What is a Committee Person?
Every four years in Philadelphia, Democratic voting neighbors in each voting Division elect up to two Committee People to represent the interests of their neighborhood within the political system. The Committee Person role is the lowest level, volunteer position in the Democratic Party.
Committee people are the backbone of the Democratic Party and the face of the Party in the neighborhood. Their duties are election-related: to register Democratic voters in the neighborhood, to inform and motivate Democratic neighbors to vote in elections, and to communicate the needs of the voters at the grassroots level upwards to the level of the Ward and to the City Democratic Party leadership.
What Do Committee People Do?
Committee People are elected to perform the following duties for their Democratic voting neighbors+:
• “Get Out the Vote” by reminding neighbors of the date and time that polls are open.
• Provide information about candidates, ballot questions, and issues affecting our neighborhood.
• Help register new neighborhood residents to vote.
• Circulate nomination petitions to help candidates get on the ballot.
• Attend ward meetings and vote on candidates that the City’s Democratic Party should endorse for every office on the ballot, from President down to City Council.
• Engage with neighbors, block captains, and community groups to work on matters of concern.
• Help bring elected officials and candidates for office to meet voters in the neighborhood.
Election Day Duties:
• Get out the vote using “street lists” of registered voters in a division helping make sure that as many people as possible come out to vote.
• Hand out campaign literature outside the polling place.
•Arrange rides to the polls for voters who are unable to walk or drive themselves.
•Recruiting poll watchers for Democratic party candidates and reporting improper behavior or pointing out weaknesses in the security of the election process to the appropriate authorities.

Your Committee People are working for YOU…
Promoting the opening of the (then) new ballot drop off box location at Smith Playground in 2022 (and being interviewed by members of the foreign press); Learning about how the (then) newly introduced paper ballot voting machines worked so we could talk about the process with neighbors and help them feel comfortable before they faced the new technology in the voting booths; getting updates from City Council and Philadelphia Police leaders on issues that impact upon voters in 2022 and 2019.
Once a year, Ward 48 celebrates its efforts. In 2026, we celebrated the Spring off-year election results when the Ward 48 turnout increased over turnout for both 2022 and 2018. We climbed to 23rd out of 66+ Wards (when including the A&B divisions of larger wards).
